As I have yet to travel anywhere that is so drastically different to anything I usually eat, I would like to mention this one Cajun restaurant we had once.
It was somewhere in North Texas, probably closer to Arlington or Dallas. It was on the smaller side but really cozy. My husband and I went with his cousin and wife and I remember one of them pulling out a Scrabble board and all of playing while waiting on our food. It was a great mood lol.
We all ordered some variation of gumbo. Having Cajun blood I am surprised I had yet to try it at this point. Anyways, I decided to try some sort of mixed meat variant as it had andouille sausage and shrimp. It blew me away with how packed this was with flavor. It was a bit spicy but it was not overpowering and that broth was SO good! Highly recommend!
One the same topic, my second favorite ‘different’ dish we have had relatively recently was at a semi-local Korean restaurant. We had their kimchi and Korean styled ramen. It was absolutely hearty and delicious. The kimchi was a bit spicy but not too bad as well. The restaurant was a bit dark with coverings over the windows with low light all around so it was cozy as well.
I would highly recommend both Cajun and Korean food if you have not tried it yet!
