Speaking of unsolved mysteries in my lifetime, my Papa and Nana’s house was always a bit on the creepy side. It is important to note that this house was very small, like two bed and one bathroom early 1900’s small. The foundation was extremely messed up so the floor would creak and pop with every step.
Per my grandmother, way back before I was even thought of, she would regularly hear footsteps going up and down the hallway in the night. When they would get up to use the bathroom, the front door would be left wide open as well. She always chalked it up to one of Papa’s parents ‘visiting’ them or whatever other excuse she told herself at the time. At the time, I bought it due to not wanting to be afraid to stay there but now, I am not too sure.
Apparently when I was a small child, I am talking about 1-4 years old, I would be talking to someone in my grandparent’s room while I was supposed to be taking a nap. Now, their room was always the most unsettling to me when I got older mainly due to the attic opening being in their closet. It just did not give me good vibes, that is for sure. Anyways, what first started out as a sort of imaginary friend situation, turned scary when I ran out of the room crying because the ‘hat man’ was trying to get me. Mind you, I do not have a clear recollection of this, this is mainly from my grandma’s retelling, but I do have vague memories of a darkened silhouette in the corner of rooms when I was young. Now, if you know anything about the hat man phenomena, you can understand how creepy this is.
Flash forward to 2017, my aunt had just passed away and my grandmother was now in the hospital. Kolton, my sister and myself volunteered to house sit for a week or so. Starting that first night, Kolton and I stayed in my aunt’s old room, while my sister volunteered to sleep in Nana’s room. According to Kolton, he kept hearing boots going up and down the hallway. At one point, the doorknob began twisting as though somebody were trying to come in, but the door never opened.
My sister claims to have not heard anything, mainly since she would always sleep with her earbuds in and I was so emotionally and mentally exhausted from my aunt’s death, that I was out. I do remember waking up several times when Kolton would open the bedroom door to look around. It got so bad for Kolton, that we decided to leave the house for a night, just so he could get better sleep.
During this whole situation, more and more memories of my childhood spent here was coming back and while I did not experience those nights myself, I believe Kolton when he says that was what he heard.
Needless to say, the house was sold after my grandma passed away just a couple months later. I am wondering if the new owners have experienced anything strange in that house.
