This week, I am choosing a book from an author I have enjoyed quite a bit, having finished her Paper Magician series several months ago: Charlie N. Holmberg.

Synopsis

Rhode Island, 1846. Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay. Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home—until he realizes he has no choice. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. Ever.

Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums. She advises that it’s in Merritt’s best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally. To do that, she’ll need to move in, too.

Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated. And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within. (via Amazon)

Why This Book?

Simply speaking, I have been wanting to dive into more of Charlie’s books. She has such a knack for historical fantasy novels full of magic and romance. As mentioned, I have read and reviewed the Paper Magician series so I will link these reviews below in case they sound like something up your alley.

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms is just the first book in the Whimbrel House 5-book series all of which are included in Kindle Unlimited!

Updates

For the audiobook The Elsewhere Express, I am about 45% through. While I enjoy the whimsical nature of the train, I am struggling to get through the book. I am not sure if it is the magical realism side of things or the overwhelming characters on top of everything else, but I am having trouble keeping my attention to what I am hearing. There are only 6 days left in my loan so I need to lock in and get through it.

I plan on starting The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion (volume 2) today. I was originally planning on starting Crimson Leaves, but I noticed it had over 700 pages so I wanted a break from the longer books before I undertake that journey lol.

  1. I love the sound of that book! Adding it to my Want to read list!

700 pages is a lot… I struggle with books over 400 pages. They have to be really good in order to get my attention 😂

    Great progress on your goal!

    Have a great week!

    1. Awesome! I hope you like it!

700 pages is a whole commitment lol. I think the longest book I have read and reviewed so far was at just over 500 pages. Luckily, I enjoyed it a lot but it still took me so long to finish it. I do not know what it is about longer books that just deter my motivation.

Thank you so much and you as well!

      1. I read Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer which is 662 pages. I don’t know if the Harry Potter ones are longer?

        😊

      2. The fourth HP book has 740 pages, the fifth one has 877, the sixth one has 652 and the final one has 766.
        Quite a lot lol

      3. Well I have read those 😂 it was years ago when I wasn’t reading that much because I had too much homework so spent all my time on that

      4. I read up until half way through the fourth, then got bored since I had already seen the movie. I remember parts dragging on for too long. That was also when I was in middle school or so.
I am curious to see if I find them more entertaining as an adult.

About Me

Hello! I am Ashley and I simply love to read, and hope you do to!
I am currently 28 years old and living in the state of Texas, USA.

My favorite genres to read and review include romance, fantasy, mystery, and many subgenres of those as long as it is clean. I mainly get my books from my Kindle Unlimited membership, but I also found myself checking out library books on Libby as well.

As you can see, I do not solely post book reviews, I also love posting daily prompt writing, as well as stuff that is going on in my life currently. That being said, my passion is reading and reviewing books to my heart’s content, so hopefully that is something you are also interested in.

I do have a Goodreads where you can follow if you desire (no pressure!) I also have a StoryGraph, of which you can follow me here.
