I struggle with negative thoughts pretty much on the daily so you would THINK I would be better at coping. Alas, nah. I still struggle every single day as though it were the previous.
That being said, I have a collection of bible verses I like to peruse through when I am struggling keeping my thoughts and emotions in check.
When I am swimming in crippling anxiety and fear:
- Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.”
- 1 Peter 5:7 – “Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.”
When anger and resentment will not let me be at peace:
- Ephesians 4:26-27 – “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.”
*I love this verse since it shows how being angry itself is not a sin, but the acting on that anger is. I used to feel so guilty for being angry that I was not allowing myself to properly deal with those intense emotions* - Colossians 3:13 – “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
*A quite humbling one to say the least*
Besides reading the Bible, I have found myself praying more often at the slightest inconveniences. Before, I would wait until I felt as though my world was seconds away from collapsing before turning to God.
I guess that would be my best advice for dealing with negativity: Do not wait until your plane is about to go down before looking for a parachute. Seek help when your problems start appearing, rather than when you feel so overwhelmed, you do not know how to proceed.
