My Spirit Animal (DP#186)

If I could compare myself to an animal, it would probably be a pigeon! I personally love seeing all the chubby pigeons in the grocery store parking lots. That being said, there is so much more than meets the eye with these amazing creatures.

  • They are extremely intelligent! – they can recognize themselves in a mirror when placed by a picture of another pigeon, they can also learn the alphabet and tell the weather.
  • Due to their innate ability to remember their flight paths, they have been used as carrier pigeons to deliver mail and even war correspondence.
  • Pigeons have saved lives – they can be trained to spot red and yellow life jackets from people who have been stranded at sea! They have also received many honors from the French and British governments.
*Cher Ami was a French pigeon who was shot but still managed to carry its message for another 25 minutes.
*Another pigeon by the name G.I. Joe was credited with alerting British troops that a town they were occupying was about to get bombed, with 5 minutes to spare the troops’ lives were saved.
  • They participate in non-toxic relationships – they mate for life, both the male and female incubate the eggs, and both parents also feed the babies.

  1. Wow, what a wonderful animal analogy for oneself. I didn’t know most of these interesting details, but I feel better for having read them.

    1. Thank you!
I have always loved pigeons, particularly the extra fat ones in the Walmart parking lot. I love how super intelligent they are while looking kinda slow you know? It takes you off guard lol

      1. You like the extra fat ones. lol I tell you what I don’t take too kindly to – are the people who feed them crap on the street.

Yeh, being super smart and slow at the same time. Interesting. Bright observation.

      2. Yes! They need a specific diet to stay healthy so yeah, I am also not a fan of people that feed them bread and crap.

If any bird works for the government, it would probably be the pigeons lol

      3. You have no idea how my respect for Pigeons has gone – woosh – way up.
