What’s in a Name? (Middle Edition) (DP#184)

My middle name is Renee which is of French origin and is derived from the masculine form of Rene. Its roots trace back to the Latin name Renatus which literally means “born again” or “reborn”.

In Christian tradition, the name signifies the Spiritual rebirth through baptism, which is highly relevant in my own Christian walk in life. Renee also carries other connotations such as resilience, optimism and fresh starts, which is beautiful to me for sure.

The name grew in popularity amongst the nobility in France such as Renee of France, Duchess of Ferrara and later spread to English-speaking countries. Nowadays, the popularity has dwindled so it is now considered a bit of a rare name.

  1. Renee, is a lovely name and it was interesting to read the origen and backstory. I liked researching all that for my children’s names too – Jesus Mateo and Katherine Rose. I frequently ask them to recall the significance and origen of their own names. Cheers Ash.

    1. Thank you!
I love that your children know the origins. Were you aware of the significance when you named them?

      1. No, not really since their names were chosen for other reasons. My mother chose ‘Katherine’ and her second name ‘Rose’ is named after my Mum’s name ‘Rosemary’.
Then, Jesus was chosen by his Mother because she is a devoted Catholic and the name is quite common in Latin America. And his second ‘Mateo’ is the Spanish name for mine – Matthew.
        So there ya go.

      2. Ah I see!
I think my mom was into French a lot so that is where mine and my sister’s middle names came from lol
