Fate – Fact or Fiction? (DP# 177)

—

As far as things being out of our control, of course I believe in the idea of ‘fated’ things happening to us. That being said, I believe more in the ideas of pre-determinism and free will. The whole ideas of fate and destiny have been hijacked by the world, spawning all the ‘manifestation’ and ‘karma’ ideologies that I do not subscribe to.

The whole culture of assuming you deserve anything and everything you want because you are a ‘good person’ or do’ good things’ is laughable to me. Mainly due to using my eyes and seeing how the world really works. When evil people rule the world, and the majority of ‘bad things’ seem to affect the best people I know, this belief comes from a place of pride and ego.

As Christian, I believe in the basic knowledge that we were all created by God for a specific purpose. In order to discover that purpose, you have to be humble enough to realize that your own desires in life may not be your ultimate purpose. However, once you open yourself up to other avenues you would not have even thought of, you truly find your happiness. That is why the richest and most famous people, sometimes seem like the most miserable and the ‘lowlier’ people in society seem to beam from ear to ear.

As a personal example to my own life, I never had any desire to work in the public education system due to all the crap and stress. However, a couple years ago when I was in between jobs and down on myself, the school kept being brought up. I decided to swallow my pride and go for it since a lady from my church worked for that district and put in a good word for me. I only worked there for two years but man, I learned so much that helped me in taking care of my niece. Most of the time, you may not even realize when things are ‘fated ‘until you are looking back and see how much those circumstances molded and prepared you for your current situation.

Not all who wander are lost

    So true

  2. ‘The whole culture of assuming you deserve anything and everything you want because you are a ‘good person’ or do’ good things’ is laughable to me’.

This sentence you wrote is truly profound. I’m getting serious deja vu vibes here lol, so forgive me Ash if I have already responded to one of your previous posts as per below:

I remember Bishop Robert Barron who remonstrated what’s called ‘The Prosperity Gospel’ – the belief by some Protestant Christians that financial blessing and physical well being are always the will of God for them. That faith, positive speech and donations to religious causes will increase one’s material health and is a sign of divine favour.
He used the Wheel of Fortune symbol to represent his contention.
The Wheel is a device seen in a lot of Gothic Cathedrals. At the top is a King, the bottom a Pauper, at one side is a king who has lost his crown and the other a man climbing a ladder. In the middle is a picture of Christ. The Wheel represents Life.

Sometime’s you’re up and sometimes you’re down. But try to detach yourself from the rim of the wheel. Where you should live is at the centre, where Christ is. Christ is Love and the eternity of it.

A famous song which also deals with the Wheel of Fortune is John Lennon’s – ‘Watching the Wheels‘. He acknowledged he rode this wheel like crazy, but near the end of his life he found a certain ‘indifference’ to it and relief and sense of bemusement by detachment:

    I’m just sitting here
Watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll

    1. You have mentioned the wheel of fortune before, but I find it really interesting to read so thank you! I agree that we all need to stop trying to one up each other since that just leads to a superiority complex. As you mentioned, we should be as Christ-like as possible, and that means not giving a hoot about getting praise or gifts in return for good deeds.

It drives me a little insane when I hear Christians constantly going off about how many rewards they want to have in Heaven or all these blessings from doing good things. I always want to remind them that God knows your heart, and if your main motivation for being a decent human being is getting rewarded for it, you are missing the plot. Genuinely. Where are the servant hearts and selfless characters?

      1. Ouch, I’m sorry for repeating myself. It’s becoming a regular occurrence. Haha I’m glad you still got something out if it even it was your second time lol

I could agree more with this: ‘…and if your main motivation for being a decent human being is getting rewarded for it, you are missing the plot’. Too right.

You know what gets under my skin and it has to do with this ‘prosperity mentality’ is when ‘footballers’ (soccer players) actively motion and plead towards God before the game, that God will favour their side as victors. It’s preposterous!

I hope this message finds you in good spirits and you have a great day Ash!

      2. All good!

And yes! God is not a genie. In fact, it seems like those people have a bit too much pride so losing would be much more beneficial for them in the long run. They should feel blessed to have even been given the opportunity to play in this career to begin with. Be grateful for what you have.

Have a good day yourself Matt!
