Trippin Down the Road (DP#132)

The road trip I took with my husband, sister and one of her friends was the most memorable I have taken. We drove my new car all the way to Colorado Springs which took over 13 hours with potty and gas breaks. I remember we were hitting some snow and ice in the Texas panhandle, to the point where I was afraid Lucille (our car) was not going to make it up the hilly roads. When we drove through some agriculture heavy towns with silos all over the place, we encountered a slew of tumbleweeds. These things were BIG and two of them freaks actually got stuck up underneath the front of Lucille to the point we had to get out and maneuver them out. Since tumbleweeds like to have thorns and barbs on them, this was more of a challenge than was originally thought. That same town had an overwhelming smell of cow manure as well, so that was a fun experience. Going from the flat plains of Texas to the mountainous backdrop of Colorado was breathtaking and the highlight of that trip.

The scariest road trip was one I took with just my husband. We were heading to Leakey, Texas which is in west hill country where we were going to be staying the weekend with Kolton’s family in a cabin. Because I had to leave from work, it was late by the time we made it into the deeper parts of woods. We were on a seemingly never-ending stretch of road that was pitch black outside of our windows. There were some half-baked attempts of putting streetlights on this one lane road, but the trees were swallowing most of the light. We were both freaking each other out since I swore, I was seeing things out my window, running alongside us within the tree line. Kolton kept looking in the rearview, expecting to see someone in the backseat. It was spooky man. At one point, it was raining which just added to the ambience and fear, but we did make it there safely obviously lol

  1. The whole image of the tumbleweeds getting stuck under your car couldn’t be more of an Americana occurrence. That’s huge – well literally. I know nothing about them from my own experiences, except in movies, but to read about it in your post was just way cool even down to the cow manure smell where you went.
I love that line in the second half – ‘The trees were swallowing most of the light’. Indeed spooky and phew you got out. Ripping yarn as always.

    1. It definitely felt like we were on a movie set since I had never seen that many at once nor that size. Some were about 2 feet in circumference. They make a bit of a scratchy skittering sound, so they literally seem to come out of nowhere lol
Man, the tension was thick that is for sure. An hour or so before it was pitch black, a deer had jumped in the street, causing us to swerve around it. We were afraid that was going to happen again, or some demonic being to immerge lol

      1. Yeah, the deer jumping out in front of you guys must have been terrifying! In Australia we had big red kangaroos doing the same sort of thing, which was just as unsettling.

When I was in the Navy and living with my young family, we even had kangaroos — the smaller grey ones — wander right up to our front doorstep looking for food. I used to play golf around them all the time on the nearby course, lol.

      2. Dang kangaroos jumping out in front of you is extra terrifying. Those red ones can get MASSIVE and jack your truck up man.

Those smaller gray ones are adorable! I would give them whatever they wanted lol

      3. You have to be just as careful or the cuddly smaller ones. They can open you up real good like a sardine can ROFL

      4. Oh lol I can imagine. I have seen some crazy videos from those dang creatures.
We watch this guy on Youtube called The Urban Rescue Ranch. He is in Waco, Texas and has some kangaroos on his property. His most well-known is named Da’ Baby and he has scratched him up nicely on many occasions.

      5. ‘Da’ Baby – love the name! Sounds like a little terror hehe

      6. Oh, he can be lol He actually escaped the property, and I think the news picked up the story a month or so back. It was a bit hectic.

      7. I hope ‘Da Baby’ is alright.
My favourite show as a kid was called ‘Skippy’ about a little grey Australian kangaroo who basically did something miraculous every week in the national park it was set in. Not too far from where I grew up actually and in the same epoch.
If you don’t mind, I’ll send you the opening to the actual show – kind of legendary tv in Australia, and then after that a parody of the show itself – which had us in stitches.

      8. He is! He was a bit emaciated when they found him again but he has put on some weight once again.
That seemed like a cool show to grow up with! The parody was quite hilarious as well lol

      9. That’s a relief they got ‘Da Baby’ although a little bit less the baby. lol
I’m glad you liked the spin-off Ash. Hehe
