“Walking takes longer… than any other known form of locomotion except crawling. Thus it stretches time and prolongs life. Life is already too short to waste on speed.” – Edward Abbey
Simply the act of putting one foot in front of the other is my favorite mode of exercise. Walking allows me to take things slowly and appreciate my surroundings even more. I am able to notice more details and beautiful and interesting sights I would have missed if I were zooming through in a vehicle or bike.
Also, my asthma is much more forgiving with walking so I can spend even more time wandering through the woods or lovely cozy towns during the holidays. When I am on a bike or scooter, I am also too preoccupied with not hitting anybody or controlling my breathing to enjoy the sights and sounds. Not to mention, if there is a shop I would want to go into or a place off the beaten trail I want to explore, I would either have to haul the bike along or trust it would not get stolen. Exploring is much more convenient when you have less baggage for sure.
For my honeymoon, my husband and I simply booked a hotel room in downtown Fort Worth. We were actually dropped off so we did not have a vehicle to worry about, so we walked everywhere. I have lived in Fort Worth my entire life, but this was the first time I have explored so thoroughly, to the point where we were discovering new restaurants and hang out spots we never knew existed pretty much every day we were up there. My best memories pretty much always include walking around and exploring.
Walking with others allows for deeper bonding as well since you all can slow down and focus more on the conversations since nobody would have to be paying attention to driving. It forces you to better enjoy each other’s company while enjoying the views and environment more freely.
Ultimately, walking pushes me to slow down and breathe, something my anxiety barres me from doing. When I am having a rough day, walking allows me to excuse myself from the potential stressor(s) and causes my mind to be able to think through things instead of being surrounded by distractions. Not to mention, the health benefits of consistently keeping my heart rate and blood flow elevated. It is quite a win-win situation.

Yes, there’s nothing quite like the tranquillity and peace of mind that walking brings. It’s even more alluring and meaningful given your personal circumstances — on your honeymoon, no less! How sweet is that?
Being a Capricorn (an earth sign), unlike the air signs — the discoverers and explorers — I tend to like knowing exactly where I’m going and for how long. Of course, that can take some of the mystery, unpredictability, and fun out of such ventures. I need to be mindful of that and try to mix it up a bit — to “take the road less travelled,” as Robert Frost so marvellously put it.-
Walking is sometimes the best medicine! Sometimes you get to know people easier and quicker when you go on walks with them and are forced to converse.
I am the same way with overplanning. When we go on trips, I am the one trying to come up with an itinerary of sorts. Being planned out has its perks but it can lead to feeling disappointed and even stressed when you cannot stick to your plan to a T. Being comfortable with not having control would help most people, I think.-
I couldn’t agree more about walking being such a great way to meet new people and spark conversations you’d otherwise never have. And I know exactly what you mean about travel plans going haywire – It reminds me of another great ‘My Friend the Chocolate Cake’ song – ‘I’ve Got a Plan’. I love the opener where Bridie sings:
“Let’s take off in the blue station wagon /
And find the open road to salvation /
Away from here.”Your closing words, Ashley, about being comfortable with not having control, are spot-on – not just for travel, but for life in general. I really need to take that to heart, being a bit of a control-and-routine freak myself. Thanks for the reminder.

I love that line, seems like a song I would resonate with as that is my mindsight with the van life. Just drive and where you end up, is where you end up lol
Yes! I for sure need to have that drilled into my skull as a bit of a control freak.

‘Just drive’ yeh 4 sure….
Below is the video of the song ‘I’ve Got a Plan’ in case you are interested. Beware the audio quality sucks in it.

I like that song! It’s really chill and has a nice melody to it and I love violins! The second video is unavailable for me unfortunately.

Thanks for taking the time out to look at the video and I’m thrilled you liked it. It’s unfortunate the audio is such trash quality. I made a short video of that song put to a family trip we had to a small town called ‘Guatavita’ and Laguna Dorada (Gold Lagoon). The song will always hold a special place in my heart. Does the video below work with the original audio?

Sometimes the poorer quality music videos remind me of listening to it through a record player or something similar, so I really do not mind it. It gives it more of a retro vibe. That sounds like some fond memories you have with this song! I love those special connections you can make with music.
That video keeps saying This video is not available. It could be unavailable in America, I have run into that problem before many a time. -
What I normally do when that problem occurs to me is I search the song on YT from my end – ‘I’ve Got a Plan’ – My Friend the Chocolate Cake. If that still doesn’t work – then I suppose it was never mean’t to be..Sorry, just being silly, recalling that ol’ saying: “if you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours. If it does not come back, it was never meant to be” Hehe

Ah that time it worked! For some reason it just does not want to play on my phone. They have a very unique name to them, but I like their style.

‘The Cake,’ as I like to call them (hehe), are my favourite Australian band. Their founder and songwriter, David Bridie, is one of my all-time favourite singer-songwriters. I’ve honestly lost track of how many times I’ve posted about music he’s created—either with The Cake or through his solo work—but it’s easily over 30 songs. If you’ll indulge me once more, below is one of the first songs by The Cake that completely blew me away: “Lighthouse Keeper.”:

I like them! There is definitely a nostalgic sound to them. Also, the upbeat melodies and tempo changes are interesting and fun to listen to. Thank you for introducing me to them!

Yes, nostalgic indeed! When I listen to The Cake’s music, it makes me miss Melbourne so much. I also find Bridie’s lyrics so relatable — not just in terms of cultural heritage, but personally too. Take, for example, their song A Midlife’s Tale, about a guy stuck in a vicious cycle because of his vices. Man, I love that song — but it hits a little too close to home, especially remembering when I was in that same quagmire myself.

Ooh I understand why you enjoy them. Their music gives me country/folk vibes for sure. It reminds me a bit of Enya. For me, her music brings me back to playing Xbox with my best friend since they had her music on their playlist with Orinoco Flow being one of our favorites. Very flowy whimsical music.
-
I get more classical and pop chamber music vibes from them. I remember you telling me about your fascination with Enya. Nice.
-
I can see that! Its cool hope people can get different vibes from music.
