Living in Humility (DP#26)

"When pride cometh, then cometh shame:
but with the lowly is wisdom."
Proverbs 11:2 (KJV)

One of the best pieces of advice I have been gifted was simply to be humble. It may not be wordy like the Proverbs of the wisest King Solomon, but humility is foundational to a peaceful and longer lasting life.

As a Christian, Jesus should be the ultimate example for how I live my life. If He could love me enough to humble Himself in order to be beaten and crucified for my sins, I think I can be meek enough to not strive with and judge those around me. Putting myself up on a pedestal has never once turned out positively. Either the people I look down on, drags me back down to Earth, or God Himself rips that ladder right out from underneath me. Nobody is perfect or in a position of being able to judge anybody, least of all me.

If humility was a more popular trait to have, I wonder how differently the world would look and feel. Social media would be a much more positive place for sure. There would no longer be “influencers” flaunting their fame and fortune to an audience who statistically speaking, struggles to make ends meet. As a matter of fact, “influencer” would probably no longer be a title since the very name assumes power and wisdom. Typically, if somebody has to tell you they are wise, they are in fact, not. All the bickering would also cease because humble people are able to admit ignorance in certain situations. They are able to understand what it means to walk away from a tense situation.

Ultimately, true wisdom comes from being humble enough to turn the other cheek in instances of adversity. After all, if you believe you know everything, what is the point of trying anything new? You will become stuck in a period of stagnation, making progression impossible.

  1. Not too long ago, I reflected on the Proverbs of Solomon in a YT presentation. It was so spiritually nourishing and I think I’m due for more.
‘If humility was a more popular trait to have..’ – yes you have to wonder.

    1. Solomon is one of the most interesting characters in the bible for sure. Being the son of David, an ancestor of Jesus Christ as well as being labeled as having the greatest amount of wisdom out of anybody else is insane. And yet, even with all that wisdom, he still messed up and had hundreds of wives who were not part of the 12 tribes of Israel. Super interesting deep dive into his writings.

      1. You are obviously across a lot more of Solomon’s life than yours truly. Except for the early books from the Old testament, I’m really sketchy on the rest of Israel’s history after Abraham. But it’s all super interesting as you allude especially the wisdom imparted.
