The one habit I am trying to make a daily occurrence is reading the bible. My husband and I are attempting to get through the whole book, albeit a bit slowly. It is embarrassing to say but I have never read through the whole Bible, even though I have been a Christian basically my whole life. Those daily check lists that divide it up for everyday of the year just stresses me out and when I do ultimately miss a day, it discourages me even further. Because of this, we are just going at our own pace, and we have now made it through to 2 Chronicles. Being the 14th book of the Old Testament, this is officially the farthest we have read straight through which is an accomplishment for sure.
Reading the bible for somebody who has a relationship with Christ is like having your morning food but for your soul. I feel myself get strengthened and motivated after reading it and feel more anxious and wearier when I do not. That being said, you would think it would be no challenge to read every morning, but it is still such a struggle. From all the distractions that come with every new day, and new anxieties that cloud your mind, it’s hard to even get into the right mindset to be open to receive and discern the words on the pages.
I will continue to fight the world and my own mental and spiritual shortcomings to making the bible a more common companion to my mornings as with my coffee.
