Scar from Full Metal Alchemist shot to the forefront of my mind when I was mulling over this prompt.
Within the series, he is a vigilante serial killer that targets the state funded alchemists. His reasoning? As a child, he bore witness to his family and village being slaughtered in the Ishvalan Civil War. He used his religion in order to justify his endless desire for revenge on the near genocidal attack of his people.
While he viewed alchemy as a blasphemy against nature, he chose to use its power through his brother’s tattoo, in order to exact his revenge. Sort of like an extra slap to the face.
While I am not one for vigilantism, I understood completely why Scar killed the alchemists that he did. Particularly once the series goes on and you see how truly corrupt the government was in the show. Unfortunately, Scar’s hatred does blind his better judgement at times as he begins to target the main eldest Elric brother even though he had nothing to do with the war. It was interesting though since Scar would allow his targets a final request and a moment to pray before killing them. He also sympathized with those who cared for their own loved ones and took people in that had lost their way in the world. You could feel his inner battle at war constantly throughout the series.
Scar does have a bit of a redemption arc. While he is still not the friendliest person, he does more or less decide to work with others for the greater good. He even comes to terms with his past self, realizing how blind he had become due to his anger.
He was overall, my favorite villain of the series once his story became more clear.
