Am I Superstitious? (DP#187)

If believing in what the Bible says about the supernatural and spiritual world makes me superstitious to some people, then I guess I am in a way. That being said, I defer greatly from how the world portrays its superstitions.

As far as looking for some sort of sign of divinity such as tarot cards, astrology, spirit mediums, or any sort of communing with said ‘spirits’, I am ENTIRELY not into that. In fact, I believe (again per the Bible) these activities are completely demonic, so I stay far away from them. I have had my fair share of spiritual encounters and events that I am not out there looking for any more dark persuasion in my life.

I also do not believe in ‘luck’ so you will never see me freaking out over broken mirrors, or black cats, or spilt salt. My faith is strong and foundational, so I do not need to stress out over insignificant things like that. I feel like these superstitions are nothing more than vehicles of fear and confusion ultimately.

  1. I agree totally that ‘tarot cards, astrology, spirit mediums, or any sort of communing with said ‘spirits’ – is not something you want to go down. Not that I discount or disown people who do those things.
I had a GF in Melbourne in the early 2000’s who was a tarot card reader and she was about those most spiritually enlightened person I’d ever known and she would continually blow my mind. Frightened me to be honest. She was also bipolar and eventually everything went to custard – I also had my own demons too. So definitely not a one way street. We were crazy together, totally. It got so bad we danced on a pub floor naked and got chucked out. It was full-on.

    1. Obviously, people can do what they want to do, just keep that stuff away from me lol
That is interesting about your ex. I too have known people who did that stuff seriously and the accuracy at times was terrifying. It made me wonder who they were actually channeling through them.
Bipolar can be tough man. I am pretty sure that crap runs in the women in my family, so I hear ya. The drops of the mood swings can be terrifying in of themselves. Yall were mad man lol

      1. Oh yeh, I got ya. Yes, her spiritual channelling freaked me out. I won’t be going down that track again anytime soon.

Oh, I cannot begin to tell you how the drop in mood swing was for her. It was seasonal and could last months and I couldn’t get any emotion from her at all!

I met her during a high patch and I thought she the ants pants. My family met her on a low one. It wasn’t pretty. I’m sorry to read it runs through your family.

      2. That is terrible. I have this one relative who had manic episodes of waking up past midnight to clean the house, then she would have terrible lows of just lying on the couch, not wanting to cook or clean or anything. Experiencing that as a child kind of messed me up a bit not gonna lie.

I experience the mood swings like that from time to time which terrifies me. It truly feels as though you are cursed, along with everyone around you. I can sympathize with both of you and goodness, feeling low while meeting your family? I do not even want to imagine.

      3. Those manic episodes do sound terrible to witness especially as a youngen. I’m sorry you are also experiencing some of that and I hope its just fleeting.

I’m also going through a bit of a bad patch related to my alcoholism and I hope it’s not prolonged.

In the case of my ex gf Claire, I could only feel sorry for the troughs she went through. Like you described it – its seems they are cursed. You wouldn’t wish it on your worst enemy. She also drank and smoked, so I imagine that exacerbated her symptoms – by golly knows what factor.

      4. It was definitely difficult to grasp how to handle my own emotions, that is for sure. It hangs on somedays, so it is just a rollercoaster.

I am sorry to hear about your issues with alcohol once again. I understand how debilitating that can be when you feel like you lost the fight again. To be honest, I kicked CBD gummies to the curb about three weeks ago. I was going through hellacious mood swings. You just gotta keep fighting for control which is much easier said than done for sure.

Any sort of substance is just a detriment to any and all issues we have. It may numb the pain for a bit, but once all those emotions flood back, it can be crushing.

      5. I can tell how difficult this must be for you. I hope you’re able to pin down those thoughts that are irrational and let them go. They are a waste of energy and your time.

Regarding the alcoholism – the problem now is that I’ve made it functional. I can limit it now, not like before, but it’s still there and has become part of my daily routine.

I had to look up (perhaps again) what CBD gummies are. lol
It sounds like the mood swings are normal, so once again it’s a matter of accepting that you’re weaning off and that it’s not fun. I know that feeling all too well.

Being in control is liberating, but it’s scary too. It sounds like you may be on the back end of it – I hope so.

Yes, all that stuff numbs the pain, a bit like an aphrodisiac. But as you know, the more you rely on it, the less comforting it becomes. If you can manage to get over the crest of the withdrawal symptoms, you may gain more control. And if you can write about it at the same time and process your feelings, then all the better and you have your focus on faith.

      6. Oh, I am done with it for good. The withdrawals were crappy though but it seems as though I am through the worst part of it.

I get what you mean how freedom sometimes allows you to fall into these cycles which is why accountability partners can be crucial.

See, I made CBD functional as well. I only took one at night since it was helping me sleep. I had to literally write down all the negatives about doing this stuff to finally put it in my brain that this is self-destructive ultimately.

I am hoping I can use my own struggles for motivation for others for sure! Maybe that could be motivation for you as well. Kolton’s dad has a cousin who would have a big bottle of Jack every single day, you could not see him without a bottle in his hand. He eventually got a DUI, changing his tune, and is now an actual mentor for younger men who are in addiction.

There is a reason you are finding yourself in this predicament Matt, and maybe it is for being a light for others 🙂 Do not give up hope of being clean.

      7. That’s wonderful you are over the worst of it Ash. ‘High five and on the flip-side’ lol

I couldn’t agree more about how helpful ‘accountability partners’ would be. Also I like that title. It makes total sense.

You did well writing it all down and coming to your decision that way. I need to do more reflective writing. Although I enjoy writing about music and find it enjoyable and cathartic, it obviously isn’t as therapeutic (or even in the same ballpark) as what you do. So, good stuff, being so honest with yourself.

That’s wonderful your Dad’s cousin turned his life around and now mentors young men. That’s very inspiring. Thanks for sharing that and also for your encouraging words.

      8. Thank you Matt.
I honestly wish you all the best with overcoming your own struggles, regardless of what they are.

Even if you do not post the more personal stuff, I would still recommend getting a journal or something to keep track of all the thoughts and wishes you have to stay grounded. Also rewarding yourself when you can push the cravings aside is huge.

All I know is everything happens for a reason and sometimes we find ourselves in the dark so that way we can eventually become a light for someone else.

      9. Very wise words Ash. Thanks for expressing them. Very kind as always.
