Synopsis

The Three Kingdoms are at war, but Meilin’s father refuses to answer the imperial draft. Trapped by his opium addiction, he plans to sell Meilin for her dowry. But when Meilin discovers her husband-to-be is another violent, ill-tempered man, she realizes that nothing will change for her unless she takes matters into her own hands.

The very next day, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists in her father’s place.

In the army, Meilin’s relentless hard work brings her recognition, friendship—and a growing closeness with Sky, a prince turned training partner. But has she simply exchanged one prison for another? As her kingdom barrels toward destruction, Meilin begins to have visions of a sea dragon spirit that offers her true power and freedom, but with a deadly price.

With the future of the Three Kingdoms hanging in the balance, Meilin will need to decide whom to trust—Sky, who inspires her loyalty and love; the sea dragon spirit, who has his own murky agenda; or an infuriating enemy prince who makes her question everything she once knew—about her kingdom and about her own heart.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

*TRIGGER WARNINGS* – There are assumptions of suicide and some suicidal thoughts, some language, scenes of past and attempted sexual assault, nudity, domestic violence, since war is the main plot device in this book, there is quite a bit of violence, but nothing that was too highly focused on.

Wow. This book threw me off guard. As my first read in 2026, this is a very strong start.

I will say, this book pushed my boundaries repeatedly while reading. This book is probably the furthest I am willing to go as far as sexual content is concerned. While there is no full-blown sex on page, they were getting pretty close to it so just keep that in mind.

The Night Ends in Fire is a more realistic retelling of the story of Mulan. I will say the author keeps it much closer to the original and darker version than the Disney film for sure. This story is set in the fictional world of the Three Kingdoms of Anlai, Leyuan and Ximing, a very Chinese-esque background like the original. The war amongst the kingdoms is the main plot of this book as Meilin decides to take her drug addicted father’s place in the draft, in order to escape enslavement to the man she was set to marry. The fact that she was willing to die instead of becoming a slave to her husband, says a lot of how women were treated back in the day. This book is full of misogynistic laws and comments by a large majority of the characters, that seems to be pretty realistic for the time.

Similar to the movie but not quite is the use of the spirit world. Instead of Mulan’s ancestors assisting her through Mushu, Meilin comes into ownership of a jade pendant that allows the wearer to convene with the azure dragon named Quinglong. Through this connection, Meilin is capable of entering into the spirit world herself and using the powers of the sea for her advantage in the war. This would be much easier if the whole law against black magic was not a thing but alas, she must keep her knowledge and access to this other world a secret, along with the fact she is a woman in the war, lest she be killed. Also, the dragon is not the only creature attached to these pendants. There seems to be 4 in total, equivalent to the cardinal directions. In this book, you mainly see the dragon Quinglong of water and the phoenix, Zhuque of fire. The relationship between these two beings was speculated in the book which was quite interesting if true. Also, the only way to destroy these creatures, is by destroying their pendant which would also destroy the host or the one carrying the pendant. This led to the ultimate climax in the story, which was quite interesting to read.

Another major difference between the Disney film and this book was the Mulan character, Meilin. Her purpose of joining the army was not as noble as in the film, as she was not trying to protect her crippled father, but was instead using this as a way to live her own version of her life. You could say Meilin was selfish and motivated by greed, or you could say she was growing restless of being forced to live under somebody else’s rules. The circumstances surrounding her mother’s death, amplified her distaste of the status quo. While I personally felt some semblance of pity for her and her situation, I did find her at times insufferable. She is quite willing to shed as much blood in order for her to achieve the recognition and freedom that she has been craving. Add into the mix, the supernatural abilities of the sea dragon and you have a crazed soldier with blood lust. I will say, her physical abilities as far as keeping up with the rest of the men and even jumping up the ladder was impressive. She is a truly cunning and insane character to share a mind with that is for sure.

The Li Shang character is the crown prince of Anlai, Prince Liu or Sky as Meilin calls him. He is someone who takes duty very seriously, which is why Meilin was so worried that he would find out about her secrets since his dad was the one who outlawed black magic in the first place. Sky and Meilin had a bit of a moment before she disguised herself as a man, so you are forced to have some tension with their interactions since he could recognize her at any point. Something about him that was different, was the fact that he found out her secrets pretty early on in the book. It was pretty obvious how he was going to react and honestly, it was a relief that a higher up captain would know. He becomes highly protective of Meilin in the second half of the book which is only solidified once she was tortured in front of him and taken to the prince of Ximing.

The romance in this book was a bit all over the place. For the majority of time, Meilin and Sky are understandably attracted to each other. However, there comes a point when Meilin is within the palace of the prince of Ximing who is extremely cunning and flirtatious as well. Meilin begins to feel attracted to him and almost falls into his wooing and almost sleeps with him. While Sky and her squad probably think she is dead. I am not a fan of love triangles so this scene kind of made me annoyed, but I get with Meilin’s character, she is able to do anything if it means coming out on top. It just rubbed me the wrong way personally.

The ending was probably the most shocking part of the book. When I tell you, do not come into this story thinking it will be anything like Disney, I am not joking. The stab to the gut I had when I finished was gasp worthy but again, keeping the original, darker story in mind, the ending was much more relaxed in my opinion. Again, this book is dark so do not expect sunshine and happy energetic songs to randomly pop on lol

All in all, if you crave retellings, particularly of dark tales akin to the Grimm Brothers, you may enjoy this book. If anything, I thought the writing was fantastic with the motivations of the characters being gray at best. In the end, I will give this book 4 stars out 5, mainly due to the higher sexual content and my moral struggles with Meilin’s superior attitude after a while.
