The Lost Bookshop – DNF at 69%

Why DNF?

This is the second book in a row I have stopped reading due to the subject matter. I really tried with this one, but it felt like it was one thing after another.

The premise was amazing, if a bit overwhelming. There are three different POVs it jumps back and forth from with pretty short chapters, so it was hard to remember who was who and what was happening in the beginning. Two of the characters are in the present day and interact with each other but the third is from the early 1900’s which was cool to get the different society expectations and norms alongside those of the society we all know today.

The bookish themes I enjoyed. The fact there are people who go out of their way to hunt down particular books and editions is fun. I have personally always wanted to work in a bookstore or library, so I felt very connected to the characters. The mysteries Opaline was exploring about Emily Bronte’s supposed second manuscript, and the subsequent rabbit hole Martha and Henry dive into concerning Opaline was very interesting. I was anxious to see how the paths in the modern world were going to cross with those of the past.

**There are some spoilers in the following paragraph so be aware if you plan on reading it**

So why did I stop reading?

There was some heavy language throughout the book, that would cause a movie rating to jump up to “R”. The themes that I did not enjoy reading include: cheating (however bad the relationship is, you still shouldn’t cheat, and I do not like the female empowerment that comes with that in this book), domestic abuse (from a husband and family members), forced incarceration in a mental asylum (made me quite angry lol), stillborn scene (this was the last scene I read). The fact the Amazon listing for this book claimed it as “The most charming and uplifting novel for 2025 and the perfect gift for book lovers!” I sure as heck did not feel uplifted lol It had its charming qualities for sure, but the negatives and language caused me lose interest.

I am going to start being even more picky about the books I read, and if I am genuinely not enjoying it, I am going to start taking my own emotions seriously and simply stop reading.

  1. This is on my tbr and i may need to reconsider. Sounds like it has some hidden triggers i could skip! Good review!

    1. Thank you!
Trigger warnings can definitely be useful since you would not know these topics were in this book by just reading the blurb or reviews. It seems to have a good ending, based on other reviews I read, so if you are able to get passed those parts, it may be worth it. Just use your own discretion 🙂

  2. It sounds like a harrowing and confronting read of polemical topics. I can see why you might have stopped. Many times I though of stopping my current read – ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ (not for the same reasons you stopped reading yours), but it cost me too much money and has the highest accolades. Hmm.

    1. It was. If I start finding myself being negatively affected by any sort of media, I don’t force myself to continue. It bothers me though because I hate spending all this time on something, just to give up but that is preferred over getting depressed lol
I get the extra hesitation when you have spent money on it. That is another reason I prefer renting, but I get sometimes the appeal to buy is strong.

      1. Oh, your simple advice about borrowing from the library instead of buying books has probably saved me an inestimable amount of money and not to mention I’ve completely run out of shelf space and as you know I don’t like hoarding!

And as you pointed out, if I don’t like a library book, I don’t feel compelled to finish it – unlike my current read, which I’m trudging through only because I spent too much money on it. I owe you a huge high five (and and on the flip side hehe) for that suggestion. You have no idea.

      2. I am glad you are finding the positives in renting over buying books! Sometimes I still compare myself to those book youtubers who have shelves and shelves FULL of books. I love how that looks, don’t get me wrong, but I would hate dusting all that crap and God forbid if you have to move with all those dang books. Books are very expensive as well and I am not willing to do that either lol I am sorry you feel like you have to force yourself to get through a book, that feeling stinks.

      3. I loan books from the library – I don’t rent them.
Oh, I get ya, that whole book shelves ‘look’ is fabulous and so artsy. Love it. But like you said, I’m not going to take it all with me.
I’m getting close to the end of my current book. Hallelujah! Btw I don’t know how you read so many books so quickly and then review each.

      4. Lol I use rent synonymously with lending my bad.
Congratulations! Finishing a difficult book is such a good feeling. What helps me when I have a specific time I want to get done with a book, I divide the number of pages into how ever many days, typically I shoot for three days. I try to stick with the pages I need to read each day.

      5. I like your idea about daily goal setting regarding reading. Since today is a recess from MLB (and sports in general), I hope to get more reading in and God willing finish this wretched book. Haha.

      6. Well I wish you luck!!

As you can see, I do not solely post book reviews, I also love posting daily prompt writing, as well as stuff that is going on in my life currently. That being said, my passion is reading and reviewing books to my heart’s content, so hopefully that is something you are also interested in.
