Having been baking for years, I have had my fair share of mishaps and atrocities occur. That being said, the event that pushes itself to the forefront of my mind was when I was baking professionally while I worked at Crumbl.
My main job while being a shift lead was making sure we had enough dough to start off the day, so I spent the majority of my time at the industrial sized stand mixers in the front. Now, if you are not familiar with Crumbl, they have a rotating cookie menu every week. That means, I have to learn the new recipes every week which can become quite stressful and overwhelming. Needless to say, it is easy to mess something up when you are constantly working with different ingredients and measurements.
One such week, I do not remember the cookie, but I remember it called for a certain amount of molasses. Basically, I misread the amount and put at least 10 times the amount of the sticky, brown poopy looking stuff in the mixing bowl. I did not even realize my mistake until I had already put all the dry ingredients in and was halfway through the eggs. My stomach DROPPED. Customers were steadily coming in, so I was trying to be as discreet as possible since I was so embarrassed by the mistake. I was able to wheel the massive mixing bowl into the back, but I had to get another employee, whom I was really good friends with, to help me lift the heavy thing to dump it into the trash.
Her and I began lifting it up, and as I was starting to tip it to the side, one of us slipped or lost our balance and half the sticky substance went all over the floor. Now, I don’t know if y’all understand how difficult it can be getting molasses to unstick itself from any surface but, it was not fun. Meanwhile, we are just losing it. I am crying/laughing due to feeling terrible about the whole horrendous situation, and she is laughing so hard tears are streaming down her face. While all this chaos is ensuing, the managers are able to see everything due to cameras being all over the place, so I am thinking I am about to be fired. I call the manager, whom I was also pretty good friends with, and he just starts laughing as well! I was flabbergasted lol All they were worried about was the floors being sticky afterwards but as long as I picked everything up, I was good.
Looking back, I cannot help but laugh at the memories of the horror I felt and the ultimate hilarity of the event. I was lucky everyone was so chill with the situation, but Lord knows, I never messed up like that again lol
