When someone is a “yes-man” or doormat, particularly parents with these traits. I feel a bit judgmental? when I say this because I do know a whole lot of lovely people who would literally do whatever is asked of them, even if it comes to a detriment to themselves. I have seen my own mother agree to things over and over again, knowing she did not want to do it to begin with, but she is either being too nice, or she struggles to say no.
As a child, I grew up with the fear of saying no to people’s requests. I was never allowed the confidence of standing my ground which led me to being taken advantage of by friends, family, and employers as I got older. This led to me having the backwards view that my existence was solely for the purpose of making everyone else happy. I am struggling to this day.
Ever since I turned into an adult, certain people expected even more of me than I could give so I had a bit of a coming to Jesus moment and finally started setting boundaries. I had to learn it is okay to say no, and that saying no was not the absolute end all be all. Sure, there is going to be disappointment for others but that is okay because……life is disappointing lol
As parents or mentors for children, we need to stop passing on these traits the next generation. Obviously, I am not advocating for being selfish, that is a WHOLE other red flag, but boundaries need to be taught sooner rather than later. Because there may come a time where your child is no longer being asked to do somebody’s homework but being asked to do drugs or God-forbid, get into a stranger’s car. Teach compassion for others (within means) without neglecting themselves.
